On one side, we see robotaxis like Waymo navigating busy city streets with empty driver's seats. While this feels like the future, these cars are still classified as Level 4 autonomous vehicles. This means the car can drive itself completely, but only within a set area and under specific weather conditions. Engineers call this boundary the "operational design domain." There are 6 levels of driving automation, starting at Level 0 where the human does everything, up to Level 5. To reach Level 5, a vehicle must be able to drive itself anywhere in the world, in any weather, with zero human help. Making a Level 5 car is incredibly difficult because developers cannot easily program a computer to handle every random road hazard on Earth.
On the other side of the road, many drivers still prefer rugged, hands-on experiences like the 2021 Jeep Gladiator. This off-road truck is loved for climbing rocks, but it comes with real-world trade-offs. Over the last 5 years, the 2021 model has lost about 30% to 37% of its original $33,565 starting price. This loss in value over time is called depreciation, and the Gladiator's drop is typical for the truck industry. While it is great for rough trails, owners find it loud and shaky on paved highways. Some even report loose steering at high speeds. It also gets a low 16 miles per gallon in the city.
