Instagram and the phone maker Nothing are both launching new software updates to make video editing and phone customization much easier.
First, Instagram is rolling out a new tool called First Draft to help people create short videos, known as Reels. This feature automatically trims out quiet pauses and silent moments from your video clips. It does the boring work of cleaning up your videos so you can focus on the creative parts. To use it, you just select your clips, tap a button, and the app places them neatly on a timeline. This tool uses machine learning, which is a type of computer system that learns how to perform tasks on its own. It will arrive on Apple iPhones first before coming to other devices.
Meanwhile, the phone company Nothing is launching its new phone software, called Nothing OS 5.0. An operating system, or OS, is the main software that makes your phone run. This update is based on Android 17 and begins its open beta, which is a public test version, on August 26 for the Nothing Phone 3. The update lets you color-match your apps and widgets to your wallpaper. It also has a new app to control the glowing LED lights on the back of the phone, which are called Glyph lights. There are also new widgets, including an "Away Time" widget that tracks how long you spend away from your screen. Sadly, older devices like the Phone 1 will not get this update.
These updates matter to you because they take the chore out of everyday phone tasks. Instead of spending 10 minutes cutting silent gaps from a clip, or struggling to make your home screen look neat, your phone does the hard work. It gives you a much faster, cleaner, and more personal way to use your device every day.
