An AI company called Anthropic just signed a massive $45 billion deal to rent computer power, showing just how much cash is flowing into the artificial intelligence boom.
Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot, is renting this power from a British company named Nscale. The deal will run for 6 years and starts in 2027. To get this power, they will use Nvidia’s newest, highly advanced chip system called Vera Rubin. A chip system is basically the brain of a computer. This new system links 6 different chips together so they can process huge amounts of information at lightning speed.
This deal is part of a giant shopping spree. Anthropic has also spent $10 billion with a company called Volta, $5 billion with AMD, and even $1.25 billion a month with SpaceX. They are doing this to compete with other tech giants like OpenAI and Google. All these companies need massive data centers, which are giant warehouses packed with supercomputers, to run their AI programs.
This massive demand is making Nvidia incredibly rich. Nvidia makes the chips that power almost all of these AI systems. The chipmaker recently made $96.2 billion in just 3 months, and they expect that number to jump past $108 billion very soon. While most of their money used to come from video games, almost all of it now comes from selling these high-powered AI chips to big tech companies.
Why does this matter to you? It means the AI assistants and tools you use every day are about to get much smarter and faster. However, all this extra computer power also means tech companies are spending historic amounts of money and electricity to keep these systems running.
